The lifestyle management programme has been designed to support and deliver a weight management and exercise programme for people with hip or knee osteoarthritis requiring arthroplasties. This will improve the musculoskeletal health, exercise tolerance and mobility of the individual and decrease pain. After completing this programme individuals going onto have surgery will be fitter, healthier and less likely to suffer from postoperative complications. At best it will avoid the need for surgery and enable self-management.
This scheme is run by the BCUHB in conjunction with The National Exercise referral Scheme (NERS). NERS is a Welsh Government funded scheme which has been in development since 2006 to standardise exercise referral opportunities across all local authorities and Local Health Boards of Wales. The programme is supported by qualified Dieticians, Exercise Professionals and Physiotherapists. This programme is aimed at those over 18 years of age, with a BMI* of 35+ to improve their health and well-being. The scheme is designed to provide opportunities to exercise that are fun; rewarding and that can be incorporated into everyday life. The exercise component will be run alongside a dietetic led weight loss programme.
*Local provision varies.
Individuals with a BMI of 35+ who may require hip or knee replacement must complete the lifestyle programme before consideration for surgery. Access to the service will be through referral by your GP/ practice nurse/ health professional.
*There will be no cost for attending two sessions per week; further attendances will be funded by the individual.
